Although it is now celebrated as more of a secular or civil holiday, Thanksgiving’s roots are grounded in Christianity. Christians still use this holiday to give thanks to God for all of the blessings he has bestowed on us during the past year, and I want to write a little about what I am thankful for this year.
This year I want to focus my thankfulness on God’s faithfulness, because for most of my life I was an apostate. I was one of the people who didn’t understand where my blessings came from. And yet, even though I was unfaithful to God he remained faithful to me.
Ten years ago I was broken and I cried out in desperation to God, and God, who had been waiting there all along, answered my plea. He pulled me out of despair and set me on the right path. I did not deserve it and that is what makes God’s love and faithfulness so precious to me.
I can never repay the debt I owe him for saving me during that period in my life, and I can never repay the debt his son paid for me on the cross. So here I am in my own little, and inadequate way, saying thank you God for being faithful to me.
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.1
