This week’s praise song is Skillet’s new version of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”

This song has shot up the Christian radio charts but has suddenly become controversial. For those who don’t know, Skillet is a Christian hard rock band who have had some crossover success on secular radio. This is the first time they have covered a Christmas song.

The controversy comes at the 3:00 mark when the song goes “full Skillet” and mostly surrounds John Cooper’s scream. I find the scream to be a scream of pain and despair at the state of the world while we long the coming of our Savior.

I find the contrasting vocals of John and Jen, and the way the song builds, to be very moving.
